BSRA Championship

What is the BSRA Championship?

The BSRA Championship was started in 2010 and is a competition that hopefully encourages people to ride to as many National Rallies as possible, and rewards those who have ridden the most at the end of the season.

If there are enough entrants, then there is also a Club category as well, alongside the usual Male and Female categories.

The championship includes all National Rallies, and the occasional ‘wildcard’ event (such as Mersea Island) as voted by the BSRA Committee.

How is the winner decided?

The competition has always been based on mileage travelled, whereby potentially the attendance at as many events as possible (if not all) would thus give the better chance of winning.

This has sometimes proven to be a bit of a contentious issue with regard to what should take precedence, as other championships allocate points for attendance and in the event of a tie, then mileage is considered. As those championships have a lot more events included in them and generally more people entering them, then things generally work themselves out over the year in regards to placings.

Obviously if someone comes up with a fool-proof way of determining the winner then it will be duly considered, until then it will stay as a mileage travelled competition. Those who may wish to contest this and fancy to lose an argument can speak to Ann, the championship controller.

What is the prize?

As well as the kudos of winning, your name will be engraved on the Winners’ Shield, which you can keep for a year.  You will also win a range of prizes including Lexham Insurance vouchers, cash, oil, t-shirts, magazine subscriptions and other scooter goodies.

Perhaps the most valuable prize is a ‘committee card’ which entitles the winner to free entry to the following year’s National Rallies and also the Mersea Island Rally.

How do I enter?

To enter you should send your name, address (including postcode) to championship@bsra-uk.com.

Alternatively, you can sign up in person at a National Rally.

To boost the chances of winning, this is best done before (online) or at the first rally of the year (in person), which in the case of 2026 is Scarborough at Easter.

Signing-on sheets can usually be found on the Saturday of the rally at one of the following stalls (depending upon their attendance at the event):

  • Lexham Insurance
  • ScooterNova Magazine
  • Crusader Promotions (patches, pins and T-shirts)

How easy is it to win?

We are surprised that there aren’t a lot more people entering the BSRA championship, particularly those doing the LCGB or VCB championships.  This is because the National Rallies form some of the signing-on events for both.

The last few years have shown that if you do, then you’re in with a good chance of winning. We understand that the question of where you live plays a big part, however, with the fact that there’s more choice of events on these days than there’s ever been, it’s not guaranteed that everyone on the extremes of the Country will attend as much as they used to, so unless you take part, you’ll never know!

In short, register/sign-up, turn up at the Nationals, enjoy yourselves in doing so, and importantly support those who support you!

FAQs

Do scooterists who live at either end of the country have an advantage over those living more centrally?

They might do, and this is a bone of contention with some people, which is completely understandable, as people should not be discriminated against purely based on where they live.

Past winners have generally been located at the extremities of the country, i.e. Scotland, North East, South East or South West etc. That’s not to say that these people have an unfair advantage though, as the mileages undertaken to get somewhere usually far exceeds the norm.

In some of the past years we have had a scenario whereby one rally could be dropped, so that a shorter distance or missing an event could be taken into account, to try to even things up. Currently it works that points are allocated to each event.

How is my attendance at events recorded?
Once people have registered their names, addresses and postcodes, they will be allocated an entrant number in their respective categories, i.e. Male or Female.

Signing-on cards will be given to them, which show what events are eligible for inclusion in the championship. These are to be produced at every event the person attends, and these will be duly stamped, or initialled by one of the Championship Controllers (if the stamp is unavailable), in the respective box for that event.

The signing-on sheet, which contains a list of all those people who have entered, will also be ‘ticked off’ against their name. This signing-on sheet will be used after the event to upload the details into a spreadsheet, whereby the postcode associated with that person will be used to ascertain the mileage undertaken.

Bing/Google maps is used to calculate the mileage from their postcode to the postcode of the venue where the stall is located (for example, at Scarborough this is at the Spa).

Note that the shortest route available is the one that is used. Unfortunately we cannot take in to account detours, getting lost or scenic routes taken by people to get to a rally, as otherwise it would make controlling the spreadsheet untenable.

Also, please note that it is the onus of the person entering to ensure that they get their card stamped and signing-on sheet ticked off in a timely fashion during the day. Please be aware that the Championship Controllers give up their own time and will not hang around awaiting for someone to turn up, that they may have bumped in to the night before!

How can I tell how I’m doing during the season?
Most people ask how they are doing as the year progresses. Over the last few years a list of placings during the year was not readily advertised and that is something that did change for 2025, whereby we posted the top 3 placings in the Male and Female categories whenever we did a rally write-up for SLUK.

Who administers the championship?
Ann is the chief championship controller with Scott (Medway SC) as her apprentice.
